Sámi Traditional Knowledge of Reindeer Meat Smoking

Abstract Reindeer meat, traditional food and knowledge are vital for the culture, health, economy of Sámi reindeer herders. Nevertheless, practices meat smoking have barely been part scientific research or herding management. We investigated herders’ approach to in Northern Norway performed tent, lávvu . The investigation included workshops, interviews, participatory observations, co-analyze meetings. Our findings reveal a typology practices. herders use variety wood species plant parts control smoke based on complex system knowledge. Yet there is need education, industry, acknowledging, supporting, maintaining meat-smoking process associated worldviews, knowledge, ensure ethical, sustainable, healthy production.
